ELECTRICITY
Auckland’s wetter weather earlier in the week may have been responsible for three car vs pole and one car vs pillar incidents in two days. The weekend also saw a further four car vs pole incidents in New Lynn, Mangere, Howick and East Tamaki.

Crews were called to isolate the power following three house fires in Papakura, Hatsfield Beach and Henderson and a fire in a building in Chatswood.

There were three incidents of lines down or hanging too low in Mt Albert, Herne Bay and Kawakawa Bay. Lines were also brought down by a passing truck in Sandringham and falling trees in the suburb of Waterview .

In Mangere, two men were spotted tampering with wires up a power pole, resulting in damage to our equipment.

Police alerted us to an open door on a transformer enclosure near a bus stop, close to St Mary’s School in Avondale. The equipment was checked and secured.

GAS TRANSMISSION AND DISTRIBUTION
There were three third party strikes on our gas pipe lines last week. All were caused by contractors carrying out work in Glen Eden, Papakura and Frankton.

A car hit the enclosure of a gas district regulating station (DRS)off the side of the road in Hamilton. There was damage to the DRS and enclosure was quickly repaired.

PROJECTS
Vector has been paving the way for the arrival of a giant 16 MVA tunnel boring machine (TBM) at one of Auckland’s biggest roading projects, Waterview.

The electricity network at the location did not have sufficient capacity to power the TBM so Vector has been busy trenching and laying new cables to increase capacity in advance of the TBM’s arrival.

The upgrade will not only provide increased capacity for the machine during the construction phase but provide an ongoing electricity supply to the tunnel once the works are completed in 2016.

Vector has already completed more than 1,500 metres of trenching and laying of new cables over the past 18 months with the remaining cables being installed by the end of April.

The $1.4 billion Waterview link is starting to take shape. The project includes a 4.8 km Waterview connection from the Southwestern Motorway and twin 2.4 km tunnels, which the boring machine from China will start digging in October.
