Good luck to Kaibosh Food Rescue at National Community Awards
Kaibosh Food Rescue, winner of the 2012 Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards, is set to represent Wellington at the 2013 TrustPower National Community Awards this weekend.
Kaibosh is New Zealand’s first dedicated food rescue organisation. They coordinate with local food retailers to collect food that while good to eat, is no longer deemed suitable for sale. They then coordinate with other local community groups to identify where food is needed, what sort of food is most suitable and distribute this to them accordingly.
Because volunteers collect and distribute daily, Kaibosh can deal with food not traditionally found in a food bank (such as fresh fruit and vegetables, breads and baked goods).
Since its inception in August 2008, Kaibosh has rescued over 285,000 meals - that’s 100 tonnes of food redistributed to where it’s needed most in our community.
Kaibosh will give an eight minute presentation on Saturday 23 March at the Turner Centre in Kerikeri. There are 23 volunteer groups and organisations recognised at the national awards.
Wellington Airports Community Awards Manager, Jo Maxwell says that “the team at Kaibosh are outstanding and Wellington should be very proud of what they have achieved for the community, the environment and sustainable business practices”.
This year marks the tenth anniversary of the Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards in association with Wellington Community Trust. Nominations for the awards will be open in June.
“We are looking forward to this special anniversary, and increasing the support and recognition provided to the previous winners over the last ten years and this year’s entrants” says Jo Maxwell.
