New Managing Director for Bupa’s Australian PHi Business

Media Release
New Managing Director for Bupa’s Australian Private Health Insurance Business

Global healthcare group Bupa has appointed Dwayne Crombie to lead its Australian private health insurance (PHI) business. Dwayne’s appointment is the result of an extensive global internal and external search following the creation of Bupa’s Australia and New Zealand Market Unit late last year.

The market unit formally brought together Bupa’s PHI and aged care businesses in Australia and New Zealand.

Dwayne joins Bupa’s PHI business from its New Zealand aged care business, where he has been Managing Director since 2006, and brings with him a wealth of experience from both the private and public health sectors.

Prior to his time with Bupa, Dwayne was a CEO of North Health and the Waitemata District Health Board in New Zealand. He holds a medical degree from the University of Otago and is a Fellow of New Zealand Public Health Medicine College.

Dean Holden, Managing Director of Bupa Australia and New Zealand, welcomed Dwayne’s appointment.

“Dwayne is an outstanding leader who will drive new ways of thinking and bring fresh ideas into Australia’s private health insurance market. His background and experience in health delivery and commissioning will be invaluable as we continue to explore new opportunities for Bupa to play a broader role in Australia’s healthcare sector.”

Bupa’s PHI business is the largest privately run fund in Australia with more than 3 million members. Dwayne replaces Richard Bowden, who vacated the role at the end of 2012 to take up a position as Managing Director of Bupa’s UK Market Unit.

“Australia is regarded globally as having one of the best health systems in the world and I am looking forward to working with our customers and governments to identify opportunities to build upon that strong base and continue to improve access and outcomes,” said Dwayne.

“Bupa’s PHI business in Australia has a longstanding commitment to quality outcomes and sustainable affordability which I share, and I welcome the opportunity to work with a team of people who are passionate about delivering choice, value and outstanding experience for our customers.”
