Subaru NZ’s Wal Dumper talks fairness in leadership
Wal Dumper, Subaru NZ's Managing Director, has joined the Leaders Review industry leaders' collective. The collective, televises an early-morning series of 'Key Moments' – editorially-based TVCs where leaders come forward to share personal ideas around corporate leadership borne out of their own career experiences.
In his first TV vignette, Mr Dumper discussed the decisive-but-fair philosophy he saw dramatically demonstrated by an early mentor, citing how it would thereafter inform his own future leadership roles.
Said series producer, Peter Anich, "Of all the more strategic, marketing and business matters canvassed in an interview conducted recently, Wal’s thoughts around business fairness, particularly given the context of leader decisiveness, really fired him up.”
"It was a no-brainer for me to ask him to concentrate on that theme for his first televised leadership vignette as part of our representative leaders' collective," explained Mr Anich.
"Came across as a 'passion point' with Wal, and I always look for that in leaders as it translates best, across camera to our wider business audience."
By coincidence, the producer recalls meeting Mr Dumper back in the 90s during his previous ten-year stint running Subaru - at the time having some success building the dealer network. "I remembered from back then how he could genuinely look at an outside idea with fresh eyes, weighing up the common-sense of a new approach without the instant burden of long-time industry wariness, or the standard tick-box requirements."
"It retrospect it was no surprise that he chipped in, stepped forward, and stuck his head above the parapet with some very personal ideas in order to assist our business-in-community exercise."
