Grandparents Raising Grandchildren wins ‘Community of the Year’
Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Trust NZ (GRG) was announced as the winner of the ‘Community of the Year’ category at the 2013 New Zealander of the Year Awards gala dinner held in Auckland last week.
The annual awards, now in its fourth year, recognise the achievements of New Zealanders making exceptional contributions to their communities. The ‘Community of the Year Award’ category acknowledges groups working together up and down the country to build stronger communities.
Grandparents Raising Grandchildren CEO, Geoff Lawson, said they were absolutely thrilled to be presented with the Award.
“To win this is award is just brilliant. It’s a fantastic tribute to the commitment, dedication and sacrifice our members make in raising their beloved grandchildren.”
On behalf of the Trust Mr. Lawson and Chair and Founder Diane Vivian accepted a winner’s cheque of $5000 and a hand-crafted trophy.
Established in 1999 and with over 5,200 members today, the Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Trust is a nationwide group that provides information, support, advice and advocacy for grandparents raising their grandchildren/kin on a full-time basis. The Trust has 48 support groups operating from Kaitaia to Invercargill and is focused on providing services in the communities in which members live.
Recent initiatives have seen new support groups being established in Tauranga, Gisborne, Waipukurau and Porirua.
