New Record Top Price at Karaka Festival Sale

New Record Top Price at Karaka Festival Sale

Day 1 of New Zealand Bloodstock’s two-day Festival Sale was highlighted by a new top price for this session with the Swiss Ace colt at Lot 1149 fetching $125,000.

From the Hussonet mare Eclaircissement, Lot 1149 from Westbury Stud was purchased by Rogerson Bloodstock for $125,000.

Having a previous affiliation with the family, Rogerson was prepared to go beyond his budget to secure the colt out of a half-sister to multiple stakeswinner Illuminates (Strategic).

“I trained Illuminates and she was a good horse,” commented Rogerson.

“I thought he was the nicest horse here today but I didn’t think I would have to go that high for him.”

The colt was the second highlight provided this week by the freshman sire Swiss Ace (Secret Savings), who also provided the top price on the final day of the Select Sale when Tony Pike went to $160,000 for the colt at Lot 1007. The previous top price at the Festival Sale was $110,000 paid for the Elusive City colt at Lot 1397 in 2010.

Westbury Stud’s resident sire Swiss Ace took top honours for the day with four entries sold at an average of $38,875. Next was the Cambridge Stud sire Keeper with three colts and a filly sold for an average of $23,250 with a top price of $32,000 for Lot 1214.

With Westbury Stud fielding three of the top five prices for the day, the stud ended the day as the leading vendor by both aggregate and average at $303,000 and $27,545 respectively with 11 yearlings sold. Westbury has a further 25 entries catalogued tomorrow by the likes of Swiss Ace, Captain Rio, Postponed, Cecconi, Red Giant, Iffraaj, Librettist and Tavistock.
