Thorn Park Provides Highlights on Karaka Select Sale Day 2
The momentum has continued right throughout Day 2 of New Zealand Bloodstock’s 2013 Select Yearling Sale today, with buyers reporting tough competition ringside.
By the close of play, 285 of the 611 Select Sale lots had sold for $12,809,000, with the average currently at $44,944 with the clearance rate strengthening slightly to 70%.
The top price was provided early in the day by Lot 707, the Thorn Park colt from Windsor Park Stud that was purchased for $140,000 by NZB as agent. The second foal of the Montjeu mare Kashira, he is from the family of dual Group 1 winners Military Plume and Monaco Consul.

Thorn Park also provided the second top price of the day, with $130,000 paid for Lot 718 by Michael Freedman & Michael Wallace for Singapore, purchased from Mapperley Stud.
Thorn Park currently tops the sire table by average with 10 sold at an average of $68,600. The son of Spinning World has just one entry left, the final lot of the Select Sale tomorrow at Lot 1052. He is followed closely by Darci Brahma with nine sold for an average of $65,000.
The Freedman/Wallace combination was the leading buyer at NZB’s record Ready to Run Sale of 2YOs in November, and they have been back in action this week buying six yearlings so far. These include a top price of $150,000 paid for Lot 135 of the Premier Sale, the Darci Brahma colt from O’Reilly mare Exilio from Little Avondale Stud.
The leading buyer for the day has been Queensland-based agent John Foote, with four Select Sale purchases so far including a top price of $105,000 paid for the Savabeel colt at Lot 745.
“I thought the Premier Sale was very strong for the top horses and I struggled to buy the colts there and in yesterday’s session as well,” Foote commented. “Earlier today we kept getting beaten too but luckily we were able to get a few this afternoon.
“It certainly felt competitive with good horses by proven sires selling extremely well, but some of the young sires were too. I was pleased to secure the Savabeel, he’s a nice colt that we’ll get ready and my client will take to Hong Kong eventually.
“We’ll be back tomorrow and for the Festival Sale too.”
The leading Select Sale buyer overall is Ginger & Bryce Tankard’s Waikato Bloodstock, with five purchases for $470,000 at an average of $94,000. The father and son pair paid a top price of $140,000 for Lot 516 yesterday, the Holy Roman Emperor half-brother to G.1 Wellington Cup winner Young Centaur (Jeune) offered by Ainsley Downs Stud.
“We’ve missed out on quite a few but we’ve been really happy to secure the horses that we have. There are some lovely quality horses out there,” commented Bryce.
“We have no plans for the horses we’ve purchased at this stage, we’ll let most of them sleep for the next few weeks and then put them to work with Shaune Ritchie and watch them develop to see if they’re suitable for Hong Kong.
“There are still plenty of good horses out there so we’ll be looking right until the end of the Sales.”
Waikato Bloodstock also made two bargain purchases in the Premier Sale, the Bernardini colt at Lot 5 for $20,000 and the Keeper colt from an unraced Zabeel mare for $40,000 at Lot 72.
The buying bench has been strong again today, with a good spread of local and international buyers. The Premier Sale leading buyer, David Ellis, added another five yearlings to his tally today, with a top price of $100,000 paid for the Tale of the Cat colt at Lot 879 from Phoenix Park. That brings Ellis’s total spend over the past four days to $4,128,000 for 29 yearlings at an average of $142,345 making him the leading buyer of the week so far.
Casey & Michelle Dando’s Bradbury Park has edged past Curraghmore Stud to be the leading Select Sale vendor by average, with three yearlings sold at an average of $75,000. This includes a top price of $160,000 for the very first lot through the ring yesterday, the Don Eduardo filly purchased by Shailer Thoroughbreds at Lot 443. Bradbury Park has another two Select Sale entries catalogued for tomorrow, with Curraghmore Stud offering another four.
The Select Sale will continue tomorrow (Friday) with Lots 881 to 1052 from 11am at Karaka. This will be followed by the Festival Sale (Lots 1053 to 1492) on Sunday and Monday. All sessions will be streamed live online at www.nzb.co.nz.
