Solid Trade Continues at Karaka Select Sale
The first session of New Zealand Bloodstock’s Select Yearling Sale provided a solid day’s trade today at Karaka, with figures tracking well against last year’s successful Sale.
With 219 lots catalogued today from the 611 Select Sale entries on offer, 140 have sold for $6,616,500 at an average of $47,261, fractionally ahead of last year’s final average of $46,059. The day’s median of $39,000 is currently 11% ahead of the final Select Sale median last year of $35,000. The clearance rate currently sits at 69% versus a final clearance of 74% last year.
The Thewayyouare colt at Lot 533 was the top price of the day when secured by Hong Kong’s Magus Equine for $200,000 from Michelle Norman's Kilmore Farm. The freshman sire by Kingmambo is a new addition to the Windsor Park Stud roster. From the blueblood family of Peeping Fawn and Blush With Pride, he was himself a champion two-year-old winning the Group 1 Saint-Cloud Criterium International (1600m).
“As usual every year I like to buy the first season sires because you are spending the same money with the first crop and you can buy the best one because there is not as much demand,” commented Magus Equine principle Willie Leung.
“Thewayyouare is the first season sire I’m looking for this year because I like Kingmambo, it’s an American pedigree but he raced well in France and he’s a precocious type and I think that will go well in Hong Kong.
“I thought this was the best colt in Select. He has an athletic build and he looks more like a three-year-old type so I will give him some more time to strengthen here in New Zealand before taking him up to Hong Kong.”
A longstanding supporter of the New Zealand Sales, the Hong Kong based agent bought three yearlings in the Premier Sale including a top price of $250,000 paid for the Fastnet Rock colt at Lot 219.
The leading buyer for the day has been Australia’s Aquanita Racing with six yearlings purchased for $298,000 at an average of $49,667. Amongst them was a top price of $120,000 paid for Lot 507, the Pentire half-brother to Group 1 winning filly Juice (Bertolini) from Te Runga Stud.
With New Zealand buyers making their presence felt, the broad buying bench included local buyers Go Racing – winner of Sunday night’s Karaka Million – Guy Mulcaster, Graeme Rogerson, Ginger & Bryce Tankard, Paul Shailer, Bruce Perry, and a host of other trainers and agents. Of the international buyers who have stayed on for this session, Singapore’s Stephen Gray, Laurie Laxon and Michael Freedman, and Australia’s Ciaron Maher and John Chalmers are amongst those who have secured purchases so far.
Leading the charge in the sire ranks is The Oaks Stud’s Darci Brahma with four Select Sale yearlings sold at an average of $82,500. This includes a top price of $160,000 for Lot 631 from Haunui Farm. With a Premier Sale average of $93,474 across 19 lots sold, and a top price at that session of $200,000 for Lot 233, Darci Brahma has another 14 Select Sale yearlings set to be offered over the next two days.
The leading sire by aggregate is Wellfield Lodge sire Alamosa, a Champion NZ 3YO whose oldest progeny are just two. Eight of Alamosa’s 11 entries have sold for $540,000 at an average of $67,500.
Continuing the trend set at the Premier Sale, Gordon Cunningham’s Curraghmore Stud is currently the leading vendor by average with four yearlings sold today at an average of $85,000, including a top price of $130,000 for the filly from dual Group 1 winning racemare Cinder Bella (Victory Dance) by Alamosa at Lot 531.
The Select Sale continues tomorrow at Karaka with Lots 661 to 880, all streamed live online at www.nzb.co.nz from 11am.
