Tuesday 8 January – Australian
equities turned sour in afternoon trading, as investors grew
increasingly skittish over ongoing US debt ceiling
discussions. Materials and financials led the way down, with
both sectors down 0.8% at the close. Conversely, energy
added 0.6%, and telcos gained 0.2%.
