SEEK figures up as Christmas approaches
• SEEK Employment Index (SEI) is up in Auckland with a rise of 8.4% month-on-month
• Nationally, the SEI is up 13.3% year-on-year
The SEEK Employment Index (SEI) increased 8.4% in Auckland last month, reveals data from New Zealand’s largest employment website, seek.co.nz, today. This rise indicates that new job ads are growing at a faster rate than applications in the City of Sails as the festive season approaches.
Nationally, the SEI, which measures the ratio of new job ads placed on SEEK to the number of applications received for those jobs, also rose by 6.2% in November 2012.
While the SEI rose considerably in Auckland and only marginally in Canterbury (0.3%), it decreased in Wellington (-1.9%), indicating that the number of applications received for roles on SEEK is increasing more rapidly than job ads in the Capital.
SEEK New Zealand General Manager, Janet Faulding says, “The rise in the SEI last month is to be expected with applications slowing as Kiwis turn their attention to Christmas shopping and holiday plans during the festive season.
“People also typically use the Christmas and New Year break to contemplate their career goals, but, as with every year, we expect to see jobseeker activity increase considerably in the first half of 2013, as Kiwis return to the office and put their goals in motion.”
The number of new job ads across the country appear to have remained stable this November, with data from SEEK’s New Job Ad Index showing a month-on-month growth in new job ads nationally, with a rise of 0.8%. In contrast to November 2011, new job ads on SEEK were up 4.3% last month.
Fastest growing jobs in the country (in the quarter to November 2012)
• Import/Export and Customs roles up 76%
• Tertiary lecturers up 75%
• Tutors up 71%
• Insurance brokers up 60%
• Corporate and Commercial lawyers up 49%
