Apple and the
outdoors star in Trade Me’s most searched
The love
affair between Kiwi consumers and Apple gadgets continues
unabated this Christmas, with iPhones, iPods and iPads again
topping the list of the nation’s most searched items on
Trade Me in the first week of December.
Trade Me
spokesman Paul Ford said Apple products remained one of the
hottest sellers on the online marketplace. “Apple has done
a great job appealing to a wide cross-section of people,
from tweenie kids wanting iPod touches through to hardcore
tech geeks wanting the flashest iPhone money can
buy.”
The great outdoors was also a magnet for New
Zealand gift buyers in 2012, with six of the most searched
items used for al fresco activities. “Kiwis are set to
make the most of the New Zealand summer with BBQs, tents,
kayaks, trampolines, scooters and outdoor furniture all
making the top ten list this year,” Mr Ford
said.
Elsewhere, Lego continues to be in hot demand,
up to number two on the list after coming in eighth in 2011.
“It’s staggering that a toy created in Denmark 80 years
ago continues to be such a hot item in New Zealand in 2012,
but Lego is the world’s most popular toy and Trade Me is
no exception.”
Mr Ford said Trade Me’s marketplace
experienced a traditional boom in site activity in December
with the pre-Christmas weekends of 8/9 December and 15/16
December expected to provide the high tide mark.
He
said categories such as toys, travel and events, sports
gear, and jewellery all peaked in December as many Kiwis
opted out of the “stress and pandemonium” of bricks and
mortar shopping, and made a beeline for the convenience and
competitive pricing of ecommerce.
According to
Nielsen Market Intelligence, more than 550,000 domestic
unique browsers visited Trade Me every day last week. Mobile
continued its stellar rise, with 32 per cent of all visits
to Trade Me coming via a smartphone or tablet in November,
up from 13 per cent a year ago.
“We expect mobile
visits in December and January will go higher still as
people use their smartphones to compare prices when doing
the Christmas shopping and as another swathe of iPads and
iPhones are unwrapped on Christmas Day.”
