Lindauer Wins Champion Sparkling Wine Trophy at Air New Zealand Wine Awards 2012
Awards sweep for Lindauer sees medal haul for New Zealand's most-loved sparkling across two prestigious wine awards
Auckland, 28 November 2012 – New Zealand’s most popular sparkling wine brand continues to win wine critics over with the announcement of two high profile awards to add to its repertoire, headlined by the title of Champion Sparkling Wine at this weekend’s 2012 Air New Zealand Wine Awards trophy dinner for Lindauer Classic Rosé NV.
The big announcement comes after Lindauer Classic Rosé NV initially won a Gold medal in the Awards’ sparkling category and Lindauer Special Reserve Blanc de Blancs NV earned a Blue-Gold at the Sydney International Wine Competition.
The Air New Zealand Wine Awards is New Zealand’s most prestigious wine competition and regarded as the official competition of the country’s wine industry. In total, 1,367 wines were sampled and of the 97 awarded gold; just three came from the sparkling category.
Continuing Lindauer’s winning streak is its Special Reserve Blanc de Blancs NV which, in addition to earning a Blue-Gold at the Sydney International Wine Competition, was also placed in the Top 100 of all wines sampled.
Where most wine competitions stop at judging wine quality, the Sydney International Wine Competition goes beyond this brief and seeks out wines of the highest quality that agreeably complement food.
Lindauer Winemaker Jane De Witt says having Lindauer consistently recognised as one of New Zealand’s best sparkling wines is an honour.
“I am absolutely thrilled to see Lindauer consistently winning awards of the highest calibre. For more than 30 years we have worked hard to produce a range of sparkling wines that are not only affordable but of the finest quality.”
“Achieving such success in these prestigious competitions is a testament to our efforts and reinforces to our consumers that they are making an excellent choice. We know we produce outstanding sparkling wines but there’s nothing better than receiving a ‘third party endorsement’ from such influential bodies,” she finishes.
The Air New Zealand and Sydney International Wine Competition results are the third and fourth major accolades for Lindauer in 2012. In October, Lindauer Classic Brut Cuvée NV took top honours in Cuisine’s 2012 International Sparkling Tasting and earlier in the year, was also named Champion Sparkling Wine at the 59th Royal Easter Show Wine Awards.
Tasting Notes
Lindauer Classic Rosé NV
Lindauer Classic Rosé NV is made from traditional Champagne grape varieties chardonnay and pinot noir, plus a small percentage of pinotage, and uses the authentic method of bottling the wine for its second fermentation, a technique that creates the sparkle and distinctive yeasty flavours. Delicate pink in colour, this more full-bodied Lindauer style has a fresh fruit and yeasty nose with a smooth and full palate.
Lindauer Special Reserve Blanc de Blancs NV
Lindauer Special Reserve Blanc de Blancs is pale straw-gold with a delicate aroma of broken biscuit intermingled with lemon sorbet. Layers of creaminess with underlying grapefruit define the palate, giving a refined and elegant wine with complex yeast characters. Lindauer Special Reserve Blanc de Blancs NV can be served as an apéritif on its own but is fabulous with fresh seafood, in particular shellfish – especially oysters.
