Housing New Zealand streamlines insulation processes
Housing New Zealand has named Right House Limited as its national provider for insulations across the country for its state houses, in a move to streamline operations and improve services to its tenants.
“We are pleased to make this announcement following a robust selection process. Right House will be responsible for insulating nearly 8,000 properties, through our Energy Efficiency Retrofit programme, across New Zealand,” says Nicolas Giraldo, Manager Capital Projects.
“By appointing a single provider we will achieve many benefits including improved access to resources by centralising our processes.
“There will also be an ongoing stream of work throughout the year as work can now be planned for the summer months. This will be cost-effective for us and less disruptive to our tenants.”
Mr Giraldo adds that by improving processes Housing New Zealand can be more responsive and proactive, which will result in fewer delays for tenants, when it comes to installing heating solutions.
Insulation is a key focus for Housing New Zealand which aims to create warmer, drier and healthier houses for its tenants.
“In the first two months of the new financial year (July and August 2012) 917 houses were brought up to our insulation standard. We are pleased to see such good results, as we are building on the great work of the previous year which saw 4,921 insulations being completed on state properties,” says Mr Giraldo.
“By working closely with Right House Limited we are confident we will continue to see even better results across New Zealand.”
About the Energy Efficiency Retrofit programme
Through the Energy Efficiency Retrofit programme Housing New Zealand aims, where practicable, to insulate all state properties. As at 30 June 2012, 38,304 energy efficiency upgrades had been completed on state properties, with 4,921 retrofits and 566 heater installations completed during 2011/2012.
The programme now includes state properties built between 1978 and 2000; previously the programme targeted properties built prior to 1978. (All properties before 1978 are completed that are able to be insulated.)

Housing New Zealand
• Housing New Zealand provides safe and affordable houses for people in greatest need. As New Zealand’s largest landlord, we own or lease about 69,000 properties, housing around 200,000 people.
• The needs of the our applicants and tenants change constantly, this means we need to understand, plan for and deliver changes to our housing stock to match – it is a big challenge.
• We are committed to meeting this challenge by investing in newer, warm, dry, improved state housing; houses that are the right size for our applicants today and in the future.
• We are redeveloping some areas where our houses are highly concentrated. National and international research has confirmed that mixed communities are associated with an overall improvement in life chances for all, including more vulnerable members such as our customers
• Our vision for the future is that state houses are part of healthy, sustainable, mixed communities including state, social and privately owned properties. Where possible, we incorporate affordable housing into redevelopment projects.
