Winners named in Auckland South business awards
A private hospital which has swiftly won the respect of the medical profession while forging strong connections with its
local community has won the prestigious supreme honour at the 2012 Westpac Auckland South Business Awards.
Ormiston Hospital, which has more than 160 specialists providing minor and complex in-patient and day case surgery
across 13 specialties, won the Westpac Supreme Business Excellence Award after impressing judges with its all round
performance.
It was a big night for the first and only private surgical facility in south east Auckland, which earlier took out the
Brookfields Lawyers Excellence in Workforce Development Award.
Ormiston Hospital opened in 2009 following investment from local GPs, specialists and businesses. CEO Mark Watson says:
“Throughout the past three years, we have been committed to fostering close relationships with our community’s general
practitioners and our local surgical specialists.”
“We believe that our geographical location is the key to our success, along with our unique approach to the care and
wellbeing of our customers,” he says.
Human resources company Pod Consulting Ltd and café Urban Soul were the other multiple winners on the night, including
receiving the coveted Small Business of the Year, and Best Emerging Business titles, respectively.
About 400 people attended the 21st annual awards ceremony at TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre to acknowledge the
winners of the evening’s nine categories and supreme award.
Local awards are run in the south, west, and north business communities by Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic
Development (ATEED). Chief Executive Brett O’Riley believes the award programme celebrating companies contributing to
the region’s economic growth is an important one.
“Striving for excellence and being open to assessment from independent experts is a crucial growth mechanism for
businesses. Organisations like this year’s winners provide immense inspiration for other local ventures and improve
their own performances throughout the awards entry process,” says Mr O’Riley.
“Auckland’s drive to be the world’s most liveable city will depend on Auckland businesses whose innovation, drive, and
all round excellence makes them capable of competing on the international stage, bringing export success and up-skilling
the region’s workforce.”

This year’s awards attracted nearly 100 entries from a diverse mix of companies including from the service, engineering,
retail, health, manufacturing and food sectors.
