Transport of dangerous goods on land

Correction amendment to NZS 5433 Part 1:2012 – Transport of dangerous goods on land

A Correction amendment 1 to NZS 5433 Part 1:2012 Transport of dangerous goods on land – Part 1: Technical information has been published to correct an error in one clause that relates to dangerous goods when transported by sea.

NZS 5433 benefits manufacturers, distributors, and transporters by providing them with updated and detailed information on the safe transport of dangerous goods. Clause 8.7 of NZS 5433.1:2012 refers to Maritime Rules Part 24A for the transport of dangerous goods by sea. The committee that developed NZS 5433 accepted this clause based on advice that an amendment to Maritime Rules Part 24A was likely to be introduced before NZS 5433 was published in March 2012.

Standards New Zealand was recently contacted by Maritime New Zealand and advised that the Maritime Rules Part 24A amendment is not yet completed and also that the text in NZS 5433.1:2012 clause 8.7 may not reflect the final version of Maritime Rules Part 24A. Maritime New Zealand requested amendment ofthe wording in NZS 5433.1:2012 clause 8.7 by reverting to the wording used in the previous version of NZS 5433 published in 2007.

The correction amendment removes reference to the Maritime Rules, and clarifies requirements for consignors and freight forwarders that are involved in the land and sea consignment of dangerous goods, including vessels and roll-on/roll-off ferries operating on the New Zealand coast.
