New World sausages come out on top in national competition
New World butcheries across the country are sizzling with success after scooping up 12 awards across seven stores at the 2012 Devro New Zealand Sausage Competition.
In Tauranga, New World Brookfield dominated the field, winning three gold and two bronze medals, while New World Gate Pa gained gold for its pork sausage and New World Te Rapa, in Hamilton, took away the silver medal for their Speight’s Southern Lamb sausage.
First time entrant New World Wakatipu, produced outstanding results by walking away with the gold award its Pure Pork, and the silver award for its Pure Beef sausages.
New World Nelson, and South City in Christchurch also proved to be strong competition, gaining a silver and bronze for their pork, apple, sage and rosemary, and prime beef sausages. New World Windsor, in Invercargill, took out the bronze award for Smokey Bacon and Beef.
Steve Anderson, Managing Director Foodstuffs New Zealand, says the success at the awards is a fantastic result, and is pleased that they fared so well against entries from standalone speciality butchers across the country.
“Our locally owned and operated stores truly go above and beyond to provide our customers with the best selection of sausages. Taking out numerous gold, silver and bronze medals from stores nationwide is testament to our exceptional butchery staff whose culinary expertise is unrivalled in the supermarket landscape.”
“Competitions such as this are an excellent platform on which our stores can showcase their range and quality. New World’s success at these awards is a great reminder for our customers to pick up some award-winning sausages just in time for the summer and festive season,” added Anderson.
Started in 1994, this year’s Devro New Zealand Sausage Competition was held last week, with 450 sausages put under the spotlight. Judges assessed entries based on visual appeal, flavour, texture and composition and awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. All entries were mystery shopped to ensure the sausage being judged was representative of what was being sold in store.
