Further success for Gibbston Valley Winery in their 25th year of winegrowing

A Central Otago Winery is celebrating as it received results overnight from the International Wine and Spirit Competition in London (IWSC).

The IWSC has awarded Gibbston Valley Winery a Gold Medal for its 2010 Gibbston Valley Pinot Noir. This was one of only 12 Gold Medals awarded to New Zealand wines across all varieties, and one of five Pinot Noirs.

The 2010 Gibbston Valley Pinot Noir, already a Pure Elite Gold Medal winner at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards, is one of the company’s most awarded wines.

“This was a very good vintage for Gibbston Valley, and for Central Otago Pinot Noir,” said winemaker Christopher Keys. “We are seeing the quality of Central Otago Pinot Noir being reflected in shows both international and local.”

The result has come two weeks after Gibbston Valley’s 2010 Reserve Pinot Noir and 2010 School House Pinot Noir were awarded Gold Medals at the New Zealand International Wine Show, held in Auckland.

“Amongst this success, seeing the Gibbston Valley Pinot Noir do consistently well is hugely satisfying. For 25 years it has been the mainstay of our production, the core benchmark of our quality level,” said Mr Keys.

The IWSC boasts the most highly qualified and trained group of international judges of any wine and spirit competition.

In tasting the Gold Medal winning Gibbston Valley Pinot Noir the judges noted its “brooding character” and “intrigue” before posing the question “where is this character going to go?

Their conclusion?

“It is going to be a fun filled journey to follow.”

Gibbston Valley Winery is home to a stunning winery restaurant, a cellar door wine tasting facility, New Zealand’s largest and innovative wine cave, available for wine tours, private functions, weddings and special occasions, the new Barrel Hall for C&I functions and weddings, and a retail outlet.

The International Wine and Spirit Competition, founded in 1969, is the premier competition of its kind in the world. Its aim is to promote the quality and excellence of the world's best wines, spirits and liqueurs.

All entries of wines, spirits and liqueurs are blind tasted in groups divided by variety, region and vintage as necessary. Awards are made on a points system and sponsored trophies are presented in selected categories.
