Beef + Lamb New Zealand Workshops to Kickstart the Conversation Around Farm Succession
Beef + Lamb New Zealand is holding a series of workshops in Wairarapa and Hawke’s Bay to help farming families plan for the future.
A succession plan can help to avoid family rifts further down the track, ease the transition from one generation to the next, and ensure a fair go for all involved.
It’s a big issue for the sheep and beef sector. We’re told that more than 60 per cent of farm businesses are owned by over-60s – the majority of whom want to pass the family farm on to the kids.
Yet, according to ANZ Bank’s annual business barometer survey, just 10 per cent of farms have a formal succession plan in place.
“Starting the conversation can be daunting,” says Beef + Lamb New Zealand Chairman Mike Petersen.
That’s where Beef + Lamb New Zealand comes in. The Framing the Future of Your Farming Business workshops are designed to provide a guide for positive succession planning. Bankers, accountants and business planners will share their knowledge, providing you with a framework to consider some of the complex issues involved.
“This is one event you can’t afford to miss,” Mr Petersen says. “It will cover a range of relevant topics such as how best to balance business and family interests. But, most importantly, it will guide you on how to start those conversations.”
The workshops are supported by New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, which is offering farmers an opportunity to get independent advice and guidance through its regional capability development system.
Workshop dates:
• Masterton – 30 October
• Dannevirke – 31 October
• Hastings – 6 November
• Gisborne – 7 November
