Conference to examine residential development challenges

In the midst of Auckland’s current housing crisis, Property Council New Zealand has established a one day conference to review the challenges and opportunities in the residential property sector and to help facilitate development.

Issues to be addressed at the Residential Development Conference to be held on Wednesday 24 October at SkyCity Convention Centre in Auckland include resource management and consenting challenges developers currently face, funding availability, ideal design, the real estate market and legal roadblocks.

Options for affordable housing and greater intensification in planning for future growth will be raised by Martin Udale, director at Essentia Consulting.

“We’ve had the debate and now we’ve got the Auckland Plan. We all realise we’ve got to house an extra million people in Auckland over the next three decades. The big issue now is how we as an industry deliver the plan, battling with the fact that development in the region is currently stagnant,” explains Mr Udale.

“A big part of enabling the Auckland Plan will sit within the ultimate provisions of the Unitary Plan. But we also need to get the processes and culture right and address the cost of development as a sector right down the supply chain in order to get development moving.”

In addition, Paul Bendall, national partner of development finance at the Bank of New Zealand, will share insight on current financial challenges affecting the industry and opportunities for development. Mr Bendall’s presentation will reveal “where we are at as an industry” and “the key criteria for assessing funding”.
