Windsor Upgrade Enhances Power Supply to Hastings CBD

Windsor Upgrade Enhances Power Supply to Hastings CBD

Wednesday 26 September 2012 – Local lines company Unison Networks Ltd has completed a major upgrade of its Windsor substation to substantially increase load capacity and enhance system security in the Hastings East and CBD areas.

The upgrade was scheduled as part of Unison’s on-going Asset Management Plan, which incorporates a range of smart technologies to provide real-time information on the networks performance, improving the quality of supply to customers.

“The Windsor substation was one of the first substations built in Hastings, and this upgrade will improve network reliability by reducing network outage frequency and duration in the Hastings area,” said Unison Network and Operations General Manager, Jaun Park.

In a first for Unison, the upgrade used a method of monitoring the new zone substation power transformer’s operating temperature. The method uses five fibre-optic sensors embedded in the transformer, producing a range of advantages.

“The information these sensors provide will improve the accuracy of the data we receive from the substation, and will also aid in improving transformer design.

“Unison will be able to improve the management of the transformer at times of peak load, leading to a longer life expectancy for the asset. This will, in turn, provide cost savings for our shareholders.”

Unison recently announced partnerships with global technology companies Telvent and Silver Spring Networks, as part of the company’s Smart Grid deployment. Unison’s Smart Grid will deliver improved reliability and service for consumers, provide enhanced management of power grid assets, and enable greater overall energy efficiency.
