Sport NZ: New General Manager, Community Sport & Recreation
Sport New Zealand appoints new General Manager, Community Sport and Recreation
Sport New Zealand is delighted to announce the appointment of Geoff Barry to the position of General Manager, Community Sport and Recreation.
Geoff is currently Chief Executive of the Canterbury West Coast Regional Sports Trust and was Chief Executive at Surf Life Saving New Zealand for nine years. In addition Geoff has held Board positions with Water Polo NZ and NZ Universities Rugby League Council. He has also coached extensively, including the 1988 World Champion NZ Surf Life Saving team, and was nominated for Coach of the Year at the 1998 Halberg Awards. Geoff has mentored a number of National Sport Organisation (NSO) chief executives over the years and is a past Chair of the NSO leadership forum. He also played a leading role in the sector’s response to the Canterbury earthquakes.
“Geoff is extremely well qualified for this critical role. He is widely respected in the sports sector and will bring a strong understanding of the community sport and recreation area. This is based in large part on significant grassroots experience and his senior leadership roles in two prominent sport organisations, NZ Surf Life Saving and Sport Canterbury.” said Sport NZ Chief Executive Peter Miskimmin.
“I also want to take this opportunity to thank previous General Manager John Reid for his enormous contribution to the development of Community Sport and Recreation at Sport New Zealand. Through his passion, experience and leadership skills, he has significantly changed the way we think about this core part of our business, and how we address the needs of the sector. We are pleased that John has agreed to stay on and lead a project in the talent development area, for both Sport NZ and High Performance Sport NZ. ”
