ICP and Sanford encouraging more Maori into Fishing
The Iwi Collective Partnership (ICP) and Sanford Limited have combined forces to launch a new scholarship programme
designed to encourage more Maori into the fishing industry.
‘Step Up and Go Fishing’ and ‘Work Over Summer’ are two of the scholarships available to individuals who whakapapa
(affiliate) to one of the 12 iwi that make up the ICP. Three places are being offered this year with a combined value of
more than $16,000.
“We are looking for individuals, who like adventure, are team players and who aren’t afraid of a bit of hard work.
Successful scholarship applicants could find themselves set up for life with a successful career”, says Maru Samuels,
Manager of the ICP.
“The scholarships provide opportunities, experience and training in different parts of the fishing industry. Two places
are available on the ‘Step Up and Go Fishing’ scholarship which includes two fishing trips aimed at giving you a chance
to try your hand at commercial fishing before taking up an all expenses paid study and training programme and guaranteed
job with Sanford upon completion. The ‘Work Over Summer’ scholarship offers a single place with more of a land based -
inshore fisheries focus”, Mr Samuels said.
“Sanford is a big company”, says Eric Barratt, Sanford Managing Director. “We are excited about giving our ICP iwi
partners an opportunity to get some hands on experience in international marketing, product development, food quality
standards, environmental performance or fisheries management”.
The closing date for scholarship applications is 19 October 2012. Applicants need to be 18 years or older and must
affiliate to one of the 12 iwi within the ICP.
The scholarships are jointly sponsored by ICP and Sanford as part of their partnership in deepsea fishing.
The ICP is a fishing enterprise consisting of the following 12 North Island iwi: Ngati Porou, Te Arawa, Ngati
Tuwharetoa, Ngai Te Rangi, Whakatohea, Ngati Awa, Ngati Ruanui, Te Rarawa, Nga Rauru Kiitahi, Ngaitai, Taranaki Iwi and
Ngati Manawa.
