Halberg Trust Appoints New CEO
The Halberg Trust has appointed Geoff Burgess, currently Principal of Saint Kentigern School in Remuera, to the position of Chief Executive.
The Halberg Trust was founded by Sir Murray Halberg nearly 50 years ago with the objectives of enabling disabled people to participate in sport and recreation, and honouring sporting excellence. While the Halberg Trust’s showpiece, the annual Westpac Halberg Awards, is NZ’s pre-eminent sports awards, the purpose of the Trust is to “enhance the lives of physically disabled young people, their families and communities, by enabling them to participate in sport.”
Mr Burgess who has a distinguished career in education, with more than 30 years as a principal, the last 19 as head of Saint Kentigern School in Auckland, says it “is exciting to be offered the chance to lead such an iconic New Zealand organisation which has already made a big mark in the disability sector.”
“I am delighted to accept this wonderful opportunity that will exercise my skills in a challenging and rewarding environment. Working with the Halberg team is a privilege that will inspire me in my new role.”
Halberg Trust chairman Mike Jeffcoat says around 70 applications were received to fill the position. “In recent times the Halberg Trust has reconfirmed its purpose and objectives and is now entering an exciting new phase. Geoff stood out amongst some outstanding candidates and we are confident that we have found a Chief Executive with great energy, vision and, above all, the skills to further enhance the lives of physically disabled young people, their families and communities, by enabling them to participate in sport.”
Halberg Trust National Manager, Nicki Turner will act as interim CEO of the Halberg Trust until Mr Burgess, commences in the role.
