New Vehicle Sales Provide Strongest August since 2007
MTA says last month, 8,175 new vehicles were sold overall, compared to 7,465 in August 2011. This is an increase of 710
units (9 percent), making it the strongest August sales month since 2007. Year to date, overall sales are up by 10,203
units (18 percent).
MTA spokesperson Ian Stronach said “August continued the positive trend we’ve been seeing all year. It’s always pleasing
to see both passenger and commercial vehicle sales strengthening in tandem. That’s a sign that there is real growth in
both confidence and sales. Dealers were cautious about prospects for August after such a strong run earlier in the year,
but the market seems to be maintaining good momentum.”
New car sales of 5,969 units were ahead by 192 units (3 percent) compared to the same month last year, making 2012 the
strongest August sales month for five years. Year to date, new car sales are ahead of 2011 by 8,375 units (20 percent).
New commercial vehicle sales of 2,216 units were ahead by 518 units (30 percent) compared to August 2011, making 2012
the strongest August for commercial vehicle sales in seven years. Year to date, overall new commercial sales are ahead
of 2011 by 1,828 units (13 percent).

• Toyota 869 units 15 percent market share
• Ford 712 units 12 percent market share
• Holden 626 units 11 percent market share

o Ford Focus 282 units
o Toyota Corolla 262 units
o Holden Captiva 238 units
Top selling commercial vehicle brands:
• Toyota 584 units 22 percent market share
• Ford 346 units 16 percent market share
• Holden 253 units 11 percent market share
Top selling commercial vehicle models:
o Toyota HiLux 341 units
o Ford Ranger 283 units
o Toyota HiAce 231 units
Used import car sales of 6,621 units were 97 units (1 percent) behind August 2011. Year to date, sales of used imported
cars are down by 2,833 units (5 percent).
Warmer temperatures seem to have brought new life to the on-road motorcycle market with sales of 401 units being the
best since May. August’s sales were 17 units (4 percent) ahead of the same month in 2011. For the year to date, on-road
motorcycle sales are down by 683 units (16 percent).
Top selling on road motorcycle brands:
• Suzuki 64 units 16 percent market share
• Honda 35 units 8 percent market share
• Harley Davidson 33 units 8 percent market share
