New World South Island launches food bank appeal
Over 160,000 paper bags will be inserted in provincial newspapers throughout the South Island next week as part of a two-week campaign to bolster the supplies in food banks.
Shoppers are being urged to fill the bags with non perishable food and drop these back at their local New World supermarket. All local donations go to the City Mission.
Kent Mahon, New World South Island Group Manager, said that what started as a local Christchurch initiative several years ago has now gone South Island wide.
“This year we are expanding the appeal by giving customers the opportunity to make cash donations via special boxes located on each of the manned checkouts throughout New World’s 39 stores in the South Island.
“For those customers who do not receive a bag or wish to donate at the store they can just bring their non perishableitems to the local New World outlet.
“Food banks play an important part in the community, that is why New World staff are such strong supporters of the initiative.”
The appeal runs from September 3 toSeptember 16.
