Motorway alliance takes out Supreme Roading Excellence Award
A single delivery team of transport, construction and engineering agencies created to manage 240km of Auckland motorway has taken out the Supreme Roading Excellence Award.
Exceeding all performance indicators, the Alliance delivered $23 million of cost savings, while developing innovative approaches to highway management that has been adopted all around the country.
The Auckland Motorway Alliance (Ama) was established in 2008 to manage the most heavily trafficked roads in New Zealand. The AMA comprises New Zealand Transport Agency, Fulton Hogan, Opus International, Beca Infrastructure, Resolve Group and Armitages Systems.
The competition judges said the project combined innovation and collaboration, and were a very worthy winner of the Supreme Award.
“The outcomes achieved by the Auckland Motorway Alliance in its first four years demonstrate it’s well on its way to leaving a positive and lasting legacy on the roading landscape across Australasia,” the judges said.
“The Alliance has exemplified the benefits of collaboration within larger performance-based maintenance contracts, bringing a team together to improve efficiency and value-for-money,” Roading New Zealand chief executive Chris Olsen said.
On their way to the top prize, the Alliance also won the Best Practice Award for Asset Management.
Other award winners were
· HireQuip Best Practice Award for Environmental Sustainability went to the Victoria Park Tunnel project, by the Victoria Park Alliance (Fletcher Construction, NZTA, Beca, Higgins and Parsons Brinckerhoff).
· The Victoria Park Alliance was also awarded the Z Energy Excellence Award for a Major Road Project.
· Best Practice Award for People in association with InfraTrain New Zealand went to ‘Building Futures, The Downer Way’, by Downer New Zealand.

· The Maccaferri Excellence Award for a Medium Road Project went to the Auckland City Centre Shared Space Streetscape, a combined approach by JFC, Auckland Council, Auckland Transport, Boffa Miskell and Architectus.

· The Auckland Harbour Bridge Box Girder Strengthening by Total Bridge Services, NZTA and Beca was also Highly Commended by judges.
Competition head judge Dr Robin Dunlop said the standard of entries this year was very high.
“Despite the tough economic conditions the industry is facing, we continue to see innovative and dynamic projects across the sector. It’s great to see the depth of skill, expertise and leadership growing each year,” Mr Dunlop said.
Roading New Zealand chief executive Chris Olsen said the majority of award winners were joint-entries, reflecting a growing trend towards collaboration resulting in efficiency savings across the roading industry.
“All the winners demonstrated new levels of best practice and construction excellence that have been adopted across New Zealand by the industry,” Mr Olsen said.
The annual Roading Excellence Awards are open to all organisation involved in the delivery of roading projects in New Zealand. They seek to promote leadership, excellence and best practice within the industry, along with collaboration and the transfer of innovation.
