ASB / Main Report Regional Economic Scoreboard
June 2012 Quarter
Auckland has fought back to the top of the latest ASB/Main Report Regional Economic Scoreboard with demand for housing
and employment growth driving the upwards trend.
The South Island continues to rank highly compared to the rest of the country with boosts from quake-affected
Cantabrians in Tasman, Nelson and Marlborough pushing strong growths in housing consents and retail sales. Meanwhile the
West Coast has now jumped to second place on the scoreboard with non-residential consents pointing to an upturn in
business confidence.
Canterbury remains in the top half of the rankings with a strong increase in building activity showing the re-build is
gaining momentum despite a reported decline in employment over the June quarter.
The ASB / Main Report Regional Economic Scoreboard takes the latest quarterly regional statistics and ranks the economic
performance of New Zealand’s 16 regional economic areas. The full report is available online.
