Building Innovation Into Our Collective DNA the Most Worthwhile Mission
The Building Innovation Report issued today fulfils its aim of painting the full picture of where we are up to with this most important factor for our future, the Employers & Manufacturers Association says.
But it only hints at the challenge ahead if we are to make innovation a defining characteristic of our collective DNA.
"Innovation is where productivity and a better economic performance begins," said Kim Campbell, EMA's chief executive.
"Its importance for New Zealand cannot be overstated.
"It's a truism New Zealand needs to be doing far more R and science, but innovation applies much farther than that driven solely by science and we are pleased the report recognises this.
"Also scientists are often not the best people to advise policy makers on the sorts of innovation that will serve New Zealand best. Rather, we will be seeking much more emphasis on business-led science.
"Government and business alike need to be much bolder on innovation as the evidence is clear; R and science repays the investment in it.
"Now we need a plan of action to galvanise business investment in innovation as it represents their best chance for making money and employing more people."
