Levin to Ports Link Vital For Region, Centreport Says

The Road of National Significance (RoNS) linking Levin to air and sea ports will provide a much needed boost to the regional economy, CentrePort chief executive Blair O'Keeffe said today.

“We support this initiative because it will boost the resilience of the regional economy by making it easier to move freight and people more efficiently,” he said.

Mr O’Keeffe said air and sea ports were a critical part of the National Transport Strategy to keep New Zealand moving.

“Improved links to Wellington International Airport and improved road and rail access to CentrePort would pay huge dividends to the region, as would the Grenada to Seaview connection.”

As New Zealand’s most diverse port company, CentrePort has an active interest in all transport and infrastructure matters.

CentrePort is New Zealand’s third largest port and continues to grow, with the freight task anticipated to double over the next two decades. This year more than 11 million tonnes of cargo will pass through CentrePort with an estimated 730,000 heavy vehicles a year moving across the state highway at the edge of Wellington city.

“Both of Wellington’s ports need quality roading access and we welcome all developments that relieve congestion,” Mr O’Keeffe said.
