Sliced, Seared And Served: Portlander Is Officially Open And Licensed To Grill
It has been six months in the making, but now Portlander is finally open, holding its official launch on Thursday August 9th for nearly 200 of its fans and friends.
To a mix of live music and food theatre, the Portlander team took the restaurant through its paces, showing there are more ways to prepare a steak than you can shake a skewer at, and winning over an appreciative audience of media, politicians and even a few rugby players in the process.
Located on the corner of Whitmore and Featherson Streets, Portlander first opened after a partial refit in April, before closing for final preparation and total interior redesign in mid July. Now complete, well stocked and with a menu to match, Portlander is poised to become a Mecca for Wellingtonian carnivores.
Portlander is a unique take on the grill house concept - one which is local, seasonal, cultivated... and just a little bit wild. Their philosophy is all about superb cuts of meat, prepared to perfection and finished in style. As they say: “Bloody rare and rather well done - it’s the ideal place to eat meat and greet.”
With a ‘paddock to plate’ philosophy, Portlander’s specialty is perfectly done, searingly good steak, including cuts such as prime angus sirloin, marvelously marbled wagyu, or pistachio lamb rack to name a few. Portlander doesn’t forget the bounty of the sea however, with stunning tastes of fish and shellfish and combined with astonishingly fresh produce from nearby farms and providores.
For lunch, a lighter, quicker menu delivers both meat-itarians and vegetarians alike delicious burgers to satisfy even the trickiest of palates – for that perfect business lunch on the run.
Portlander’s lively bar is also well placed, with tasty, ‘hard to say no to’ tempting morsels that complement any beverage, a hip selection of cocktails designed by in-house mixologists rival any cocktail bar, plus a wine list gathered from New Zealand, Australia and beyond.
All of which suggests that Portlander is well poised to carve a hearty slice out of the Wellington restaurant marketplace.
