New vehicle market remains strong
July new vehicle registrations continue to very remain strong with the industry total running 19.5% (9,493 vehicles) up
on the corresponding seven month ytd period last year (48,717 verses 58,210). For July 2012, new passenger car
registrations of 6,208 were up 27.2 % (1,329 vehicles) on July 2011 and new commercials of 2,153 were up 17.9 %( 327
vehicles) over the same period.
“Business and private buyers are recognising the full benefits of a New Zealand new vehicle with their outstanding
valve, world class life and injury saving safety benefits and improving fuel economy” said Mr Perry Kerr Chief Executive
Officer of the Motor Industry Association. “The new vehicle industry continues to outperform other sectors of the
economy and have well and truly shaken off all of the supply problems they faced during 2011. Members and their dealers
will again be very happy with this result” he said.
Toyota remained in number one position for passenger cars with 1,098 registrations followed by Holden with 735 and Ford
in third with 628. With commercial vehicles again Toyota was in first place with 531 registrations followed by Ford with
376 and Nissan 218. The top two selling models for the month were light commercials - the Ford Ranger 330 registrations
followed by the Toyota Hilux with 328 registrations. In the commercial segment the Nissan Navara remained in third place
with 198 registrations. In the passenger car segment the Holden Captiva was the best-selling model with 261
registrations follow by the Suzuki Swift (242 registrations) with the Toyota Corolla number three (235 registrations)
