How Will You Prepare Your Spuds This Roast Day?
Potatoes New Zealand is joining forces with Selaks Wines to celebrate Selaks New Zealand Roast Day this Sunday, August
Roast Day works to encourage taking time out for families and friends to celebrate NZ’s most beloved meal – the
traditional roast dinner.
For decades roast dinners have been bringing Kiwi families together, but fast forward to today’s busy world and the
roast dinner seems to be turning into a thing of the past.
Glenda Gourley, Food and Education Consultant for Potatoes New Zealand, understands the time constraints on the modern
family, but believes there is no excuse for not being able to share the joy of good quality food.
“We need to take time out and ensure we’re spending quality time with our families. That’s why an initiative like this
is the ideal opportunity to share wholesome nutritious food around the table with loved ones.”
According to the National Survey of Children and Young People's Physical Activity and Dietary Behaviours in New Zealand,
two-thirds of New Zealand children do not consume enough vegetables.
Ms Gourley believes a roast dinner which includes fresh vegetables, such as potatoes, is a positive step towards
“A roast dinner is also an ideal way to get children in the kitchen helping to prepare the meat and vegetables, which
passes on valuable life-skills to the next generation but it also teaches them about how to make healthy food choices
and potatoes are the ideal option.”
“I know in my house - roast, boiled or mashed potatoes are the perfect partner to any roast dinner and onion gravy of
course!” says Ms Gourley.
