Healthy Chocolate? Local spin

Healthy Chocolate? Local spin

Chocolate has recently been claimed as a ‘health food’ in Europe. New Zealand based business Kapow has taken hold of this and released a dark chocolate vitamin C tablet.

Swiss chocolate manufacturer Barry Callebaut AG has been backed by the European FSA for it application to claim chocolate as a ‘health food’. The claim is made based on research finding that dark chocolate has a high flavonol content.

Flavonols can be found in dark chocolate due to it cocoa content and some fruits and vegetables. These compounds have been found to improve blood circulation, lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease. Dark chocolate is also found to have a low GI index and to lower cholesterol levels in the blood.

Kapow is running a competition to win a month’s supply of vitamin c tablets. It is also opening with free samplings at Chipmunks Tauranga on 8th August 2012. Available at selected pharmacies around New Zealand.
