Unison Contracting Technicians Among Best in New Zealand

Unison Contracting Technicians Among Best in New Zealand

25 July 2012 – Six fibre technicians from Unison Contracting Services Ltd can now count themselves as part of an elite group, after gaining international accreditation as Certified Fibre Optic Technicians.

Only 170 fibre installers held the certification at the beginning of the year. Unison contracted internationally accredited training provider, Comms Learning, to deliver the course. Currently there are no fibre optic qualifications available via the New Zealand Qualifications Framework.

Unison Group Chief Executive Officer Ken Sutherland said the employees' achievement showed the Company’s passion for excellence.

“Unison is focused on delivering the best possible fibre optic network for our customers. Our technicians scored 89% or higher in their theory exam, and have practiced the skills to a level we can confidently state ranks them amongst the best in New Zealand.”

The employees completed a basic introductory course and safety training before commencing a total of eighteen months of theory and practical based training.

“As part of our focus on developing a highly skilled workforce, we have established the Unison Centre of Excellence training facility at the Eastern Institute of Technology. The training provider was so impressed with the Centre of Excellence, which includes a bespoke fibre training room, they have booked the facility to offer a public fibre optic training course in August,” said Mr Sutherland.

Fibre Operations Manager James Buckley said a career in fibre optics was an unexpected but welcome opportunity for some of the trainees, who previously worked as labourers, mechanics or fruit pickers before gaining employment with Unison Contracting Services.

“We could have recruited internationally, but we have chosen to offer opportunities to people from within our regions, who displayed a great attitude and strong work ethic. As a result we have some of the best technicians in the country, whom otherwise may not have had an opportunity such as this.”
