Monteith’s Celebrates the Opening of Its New Brewery with Free Beer
After 18 months of hard work, Monteith’s iconic Greymouth brewery has been reopened. And they’ve wasted no time in brewing a very special new beer.
Eagerness to test the new brewery and thank the tradesmen who brought it to fruition resulted in Tony Mercer, Monteith’s Head Brewer, creating a celebratory ale, aptly named Roof Shout. The first beer to come out of the new brewery, Roof Shout is an exciting peek into the future of Monteith’s.
“After you get a house built, you put some beers on. When someone builds you a brewery you brew them a beer. We made Roof Shout to thank all the people who helped with the build and to get our drinkers excited about our new found flexibility in terms of batch brewing.”
What will excite their drinkers even more is that Roof Shout was brewed not to be sold, but to be given away.
On the 25th of July, Monteith’s Bars around the country will be tapping free Roof Shout kegs and toasting a new era of beer exploration.
Then, in the month following the Roof Shout, two new beers will be released from the brewery. An Apricot Wheat beer and an IPA (Indian Pale Ale). This, Mercer says, is just the beginning.
Work on the 143-year-old brewery, the oldest on the West Coast, began in March 2011 with the decommissioning of aging brewing equipment and later the demolition of old packaging lines and office buildings.
Touted as the most technologically advanced brewery in the Southern Hemisphere, the new home of Monteith’s will become a veritable testing ground for their brewers. Something Mercer is very much looking forward to.
“Monteith’s have been exploring beer since 1868, but this new brewery takes beer exploration to another level. We can craft small batches, experiment with new tastes and be responsive to what our drinkers want.”
The $4 million dollar rebuild of the original Monteith’s brewery has been hugely rewarding for all those involved. That said, the brewers are eager to hang up their hard hats and get back towhat they do best: Brew beer.
“I’m extremely proud of the new home we have created for Monteith’s. We’ve never believed there’s one perfect beer, only the perfect beer for the perfect moment. This new brewery will make our search for those new, perfect beers incredibly fruitful.”
