Death of Commissioner Bryan Wyness

The Transport Accident Investigation Commission is deeply saddened by the death of one of its three commissioners, Captain Bryan Wyness, in a motorcycle accident last Friday.

The Chief Commissioner, John Marshall QC said that Captain Wyness had made an outstanding contribution to transport safety in New Zealand and would be greatly missed.

First appointed to the Commission in November 2004, Captain Wyness had his term extended three times, “testimony to the high regard in which he was held by the government and industry,” Mr Marshall said.

“We will all miss his wise counsel and practical understanding of the issues involved not only in aviation and flight safety but also in the maritime and rail transport modes. Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.”

Captain Wyness was a former Vice President Flight Operations for Air New Zealand and held appointments with the International Advisory Committee of the Flight Safety Foundation and the Independent Aviation Advisory panel. He was the current chairman of the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators New Zealand Region.

A former Boeing 747 pilot, he was an accredited Flying Instructor, a Flight Superintendent, Fleet Captain and Flight Operations Manager (Technical). He held a Bachelor of Science degree and an Airline Transport Pilot's Licence and Flight Navigator Qualification.
