Auctioneers turn heads at championship

What’s not to admire about an auctioneer who’s in control, has the gift of the gab, is sharp-witted, affable, smartly dressed, well groomed and earning you money?! The REINZ National Real Estate Auctioneers Championships happen next week Monday & Tuesday, 25-26 June at the Ellerslie Event Centre in Auckland, and competing for the much-coveted and prestigious national top spot is a host of, frankly, very attractive auctioneers - nonetheless it is their talent that is turning heads.

At the champs, competitors are introduced to an actual house for sale on the day of competition. They have just a few hours to prepare their pitch.

Once the starter begins, confederates in the audience battle it out for their imaginary new home. Their job is not to make the auction easy - bids move quickly in varying amounts - no calculators in this room. It is the auctioneer’s role to manage the confusion amidst the haste, noise, indecision and questions on technical real estate matters that must be answered correctly and with aplomb. The auctioneer’s role is at once performer, juggler and licensed salesperson as they remember to draw in the best aspects of the property with such timing as to ensure top dollar for their client, the vendor. In the finals, Auctioneers have just 15 minutes to conclude the sale. It is fast paced and full of suspense, with marks deducted for the slightest faux pas. The winner takes away the glory and the trophy, but both winner and runner up of this event earn the right to represent New Zealand at the Australasian Auctioneering Championships in October.

On the judging panel this year is four-time New Zealand champion, Mark Sumich of Sumich Realty - who has also won the Australasian champs three times even when on Australian soil. Content with his extraordinary run, Sumich steps aside this year and the industry is abuzz with speculation as to who will next seize the highly coveted championship cup. Harcourts’ Andrew North narrowly missed the win last year being runner-up in the New Zealand and Australasian champs. Is the cup now his for the taking? Or will another of the 25 other senior auctioneers snatch it away instead?

With home auctions rapidly on the rise as they fetch increasing house prices, Auctioneers are now turning heads - for a host of reasons! If you love property, you’ll love the REINZ National Real Estate Auctioneers Championships.
