Auckland, New Zealand. 20 June, 2012. Iconic broadcaster and much loved New Zealander Judy Bailey continues her epic journey around Australia this week in the wilds of South Australia and then walks the streets of gold in Victoria’s historic cities of Ballarat and Bendigo.

From South Australia’s gateway city of Adelaide, Judy takes a short flight to the region’s south west coast. First stop is Port Lincoln, the self proclaimed, ‘Seafood Capital of Australia.’ Here Judy indulges in some of the regions local specialities and then steps outside of her comfort zone, and that of the boat to swim with mighty Blue FinTuna, which is a lot more daring than it first sounds. From tuna to the sea lions of Baird Bay, Judy ticks off a good few items from her bucket list, describing her in water encounter with the regions Sea Lions as “one of the most beautiful experiences of my entire life.

Judy joins Geoff Scholz from Gawler Ranges Wilderness Safaris and follow the Seafood Trail to South Australia’s outback and the 550,000 hectare Lake Gairdner National Park. Through native bush and bumping along dirt tracks, Judy is transfixed as she arrives at her next location, Lake Gairdner Salt Lake.
One of Australia’s largest salt lakes this vast whiteness is a sight to behold and is the remnants of a huge and ancient inland ocean. Remaining with her guide, Judy sets up camp at Kangaluna for the evening and experiences camping of a very different kind.

The natural beauty and a raft of wildlife encounters leave Judy wanting for more, but Australia is calling and her next stop eastbound is the State of Victoria.

In Victoria, Judy travels beyond the gateway city of Melbourne into the Goldfields region and visits the sister cities of Ballarat and Bendigo. Described as the “book ends” of the Goldfields, these two cities were the epicentre of the greatest gold rush in history with gold fever spreading right around the world. Judy follows in the footsteps of those who gave up everything to seek their fortune at the ends of the world.

Judy does not strike gold in the region but is captivated by the grand charm and gentile culture that is the legacy of the former riches of this region.

This episode marks the second in a five-part series, which sees Judy take the road less travelled around our number one holiday destination and uncovers some hidden gems in the people and places she visits.
