Strong Growth in Online Job Vacancies in May
Job vacancies advertised online grew strongly in May after consecutive falls in March and April, according to the latest Jobs Online.
Results from the Department of Labour’s Jobs Online show skilled job vacancies increased by a seasonally adjusted 9.5 percent in May compared to April, while online job
vacancies overall increased by 9.9 percent.
“The increase in job vacancies, along with positive employment growth overall and positive hiring intentions, is
consistent with the anticipated gradual recovery in the labour market,” says the Department of Labour Head of Research,
Vasantha Krishnan.
Skilled job vacancies rose across all industry groups in May with the biggest growth nationally in sales, retail,
marketing and advertising (up by 19.2 percent), followed by accounting, HR, legal and administration (up by 13.4
percent) and healthcare and medical (up by 10.4 percent).
Skilled job vacancies were up in all regions, with the South Island (excluding Canterbury) and Auckland recording the
strongest growth of 11.8 percent and 11.6 percent respectively.
Growth in online job vacancies has been positive over the past 12 months, with skilled job vacancies 10.1 percent higher
than a year ago and job vacancies overall up 12.8 percent.
Over the 12 months to May, the South Island (excluding Canterbury) has had the strongest growth in skilled vacancies (up
by 36 percent) followed closely by Canterbury (up by 32 percent).
The continued strong growth in Canterbury over the year was driven by the demand for skilled workers in construction and
engineering (up by 61 percent) and accounting, HR, legal and administration (up by 55 percent).
