Wellington Hospital opens its doors to 100 year 12 students

Did you know what you wanted to do when you left school? How did you know that you wanted to be a nurse, an astronaut or a chef? Capital and Coast District Health Board is doing its part to help young people understand what health careers have to offer by taking part in this year’s Workchoice Day.

On 12 June, CCDHB will be hosting 100 Year 12 students from across the Wellington region to give them a look behind the scenes of the hospital with hands on experiences. Students will be able to try out health careers, they’ll learn CPR, practice plastering a limb, and work in the same simulated medical environments as real medical professionals.

Workchoice Day provides an opportunity for secondary school students to see what working in health is like, it also lets these young people see that if you want to work in health, university is not the only way to get there. There are so many high profile jobs in health - surgeons, doctors and nurses - that it can be easy to forget that there are over 7000 job titles in health. From becoming a medical physicist to phlebotomist, if you think of almost any job you can probably do it in health.

“Capital and Coast District Health Board is proud to support this initiative, we have a strong emphasis on more young people moving into health careers, in the community, in the hospital and in research,” says CCDHB CEO Mary Bonner. “By holding days like this, onsite at the hospital, we get to show these young people an entire world of opportunities that working in health can provide.”
