Greenhouse gas emissions for horticulture products – new BSI document – free download
PAS 2050-1:2012 Assessment of life cycle greenhouse gas emissions for horticulture products is designed to meet the product carbon footprint needs of the horticulture sector. Used in conjunction with PAS 2050, it
will help reduce the impact of products on climate change. PAS 2050-1 provides a framework to calculate carbon
footprint, reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, increase efficiency, and cut costs.
'This new Standard is the first step towards calculating the greenhouse gas emissions consistently across the whole
chain of the horticulture industry to facilitate verifiable and comparable results,' says Agnes van Ardenne, President
of the Product Board of Horticulture (Netherlands).
'PAS 2050-1 is the first of what is expected to be a new series of sector focus specifications that will enhance the
application of PAS 2050 following its revision in September 2011,' says Shirley Bailey Wood, Director of Publishing at
BSI.
PAS 2050 helps horticulture organisations around the world to quantify the life cycle GHG emissions of goods and
services. The Standard also helps organisations to:
• get a better understanding and control over their supply chain, and identify 'hotspots' and related cost/energy
saving opportunities
• devise ongoing programmes to reduce GHG emissions
• measure climate change improvements over time
• improve relationships with stakeholders and achieve greater cooperation with peers, suppliers, and customers by
providing GHG emissions information for products that are used in other products further down the supply chain.
The release of PAS 2050-1 coincides with other products and services designed to help organisations to achieve a more
sustainable and efficient business model, including:
• ISO 50001:2011 Energy management systems – Requirements with guidance for use
• BS 8904:2011 Guidance for community sustainable development
• BS 8900 Guidance for managing sustainable development, due for release in August 2012.
