FROM THE RAREST MOTORCYCLE – TO MODERN DAY MOTORING ICONS

Representing all periods of Design – Webb’s Classic Motorcycles & Cars of the Day auction | Saturday 31 March 2.00pm

One of the most anticipated events on the motor enthusiasts’ calendar is Webb’s Classic Motorcycle and Car Auction. The first event for 2012 will be held this Saturday 31 March at 2.00pm.

Following last years success, this bi-annual event has attracted extensive local and international interest. In March 2011 Webb’s set a record price for a motorcar at auction in New Zealand when a 1963 Ferrari 250 Lusso sold for $1.1 million.

This year Webb’s Managing Director Neil Campbell has once again gathered some truly great machines – representing all periods of motoring design .

“We’ve over 40 beautiful machines on offer, from one of the rarest Australian motorcycles, to some fine post modern classics and modern day icons. For the true enthusiast of motoring design , this sale is compulsory viewing – while for the collector, it’s an exceptional opportunity to acquire the finest examples”

One of the rarest bikes on offer is the 1914 Quirk Mona 600cc –currently receiving plenty of attention from Australian collectors because as Neil state; “It is the one known example of the only Australian-made motorcycle ever produced and it is thought that only about 90 of these machines were ever made”

The motor configuration was based on the 4hp Douglas ; however, the Quirks Mona offered many unique and advanced features for the day and the build quality appears to have been extremely high. This machine was previously in the collection of well-known Australian bike man Paddy Ryan from Parramatta . The current custodian acquired the machine from Paddy in 1970. It comes as one bike partially dismantled and another set of parts and is estimated to sell for between $15,000 - $30,000.

The range of cars on offer also represent key design references - from the historic and obscure 1915 Dort to the iconic 1974 E-type Jaguar,

“The E-Type Jaguar is one of the most celebrated car design s in the 20th Century. The example on offer is in immaculate un-restored condition, with less than 20,000 original miles – powered by a V12 engine it is capable of producing 241 horsepower - which will drag the car over the 145km mark”

With extremely low mileage and estimated to sell for between $100,000 - $150,000, it’ll definitely be one of many great machines to watch as they go under the hammer in front of an adrenaline fuelled audience this Saturday. With 10,000 Aussies and Brits coming into to watch the World Speedway Championship on the Saturday night Webb’s afternoon (2pm) auction will be the perfect start.
