Roy Morgan State of the Nation Report 4: Asian flavours still the preferred international cuisine in New Zealand

Chinese food remains the international cuisine of choice for New Zealanders with nearly three quarters of the population citing it as a food they like eating. Other Asian styles such as Indian and Thai also continue to prove popular.

According to the NZ State of the Nation Report 4, 74.2% of the New Zealand population (14+) enjoy eating Chinese food. This was followed by Indian (56.7%), Thai (53.3%), Italian (52.3%), Mexican (40.9%) and Japanese (37.1%).

Over the past decade most international cuisines have experienced a growth in popularity, with Indian and Japanese undergoing the strongest rise. However Italian food has remained steady since 2002 and Chinese food has declined.

“The increasing popularity of international cuisine in part reflects the diversifying population and multi-cultural communities. A decade ago, Chinese food was the most popular by a significant proportion, howe ver of late other Asian styles such as Indian and Thai are becoming increasing popular.

“The increasingly multicultural New Zealand population is leading to a greater variety of international foods. Not only are more international flavours available, but they are in greater abundance nowadays compared to the past. This increased exposure to foreign foods has likely encouraged people to try different cuisines.”

Roy Morgan’s New Zealand State of the Nation Report 4 : As well as the standard features of this quarterly report which include a look into the trends of New Zealand society, this edition provides a comprehensive spotlight section on ‘New Zealanders Aged 55+.’
