Delta Brings Solid Waste Expertise to Clutha District
Infrastructure specialist Delta has been selected to provide integrated solid waste services for the Clutha District
starting 1 April 2012. Clutha District Council selected Delta after a competitive tender process and careful
consideration of the service provider offering the best value to Council, says District Assets Manager, Jules Witt.
“From 1 April 2012, Delta will be responsible for all solid waste services in Clutha District including kerbside
recycling and rubbish collection, transfer stations and the Mount Cooee landfill. The new long-term contract is for an
initial period of five years with renewal periods of up to a further four years.
“Delta offered expertise in solid waste management, the ability to operate services to meet stringent environmental
regulations and value-for-money. Delta already operates Dunedin’s Green Island landfill which has gold-level Enviro-Mark
certification and solid waste services for Central Otago District Council.
“As we move to introduce the new kerbside recycling and rubbish scheme across the Clutha District in April, we needed an
experienced service provider that can deliver the new service successfully and provide integrated waste management from
collection to transportation and processing or safe disposal,” says Mr Witt.
Delta Chief Executive Grady Cameron says, “We are delighted to be chosen as solid waste service provider to Clutha
District Council and look forward to a productive, long-term partnership. We’re pleased to be introducing kerbside
recycling and applying our smart thinking to make ongoing improvements to solid waste management, including bringing
Mount Cooee landfill into line with current environmental practice.
“Today saw the arrival of a new, 21-tonne BOMAG waste compactor that will go a long way towards improving environmental
performance at Mount Cooee landfill. The NZ$465,000 investment in the German-built compactor represents our strong
commitment to the Clutha District. The machine is the latest in technology and specifically designed for use at
low-volume landfill sites such as Mount Cooee. The machine is capable of compacting of waste, clean fill and cover
material used to form a cap on the top of the landfill. More powerful and more efficient, the compactor will help extend
the economic life of the landfill by maximising the remaining space available.
“Delta is looking forward to bringing the benefits of our solid waste management expertise to the Clutha District. At
Dunedin’s Green Island landfill, we introduced a range of innovative landfill management practices including isotopic
leachate monitoring and odour suppression technologies. Green Island was the first landfill in New Zealand to achieve
Enviro-Mark® gold level certification. We have minimised the impacts on neighbouring residents and surrounding
waterways.
“A new fortnightly rubbish and recycling collection scheme starts in Clutha District in April 2012. Starting in the week
of 2 April, residents will put out their existing green wheelie bin for household waste, then the following week of 9
April put out their new yellow recycling wheelie bin for collection. Residents will still put out one wheelie bin each
week and their collection day remains the same.
“Mount Cooee currently averages around 10,000 tonnes of disposal waste per year. With the introduction of kerbside
recycling and the support of Clutha residents, we expect to see that amount reduce. Clutha residents will be able to
recycle plastics, metal cans, paper and cardboard at the kerbside. Delivery of the new yellow recycling bins is almost
complete and detailed information on the service is provided with the bins, in local newspapers, radio and on the
Council’s website,” says Mr Cameron.
