Go Vocab wins BNZ Start-up Alley competition

Go Vocab of Wellington has won the BNZ Start-Up Alley competition held at the Webstock conference in Wellington tonight.

Go Vocab successfully pitched its business plan to a panel of judges in front of a live audience at Webstock to take the top prize. Go Vocab wins a prize pack that includes $10,000 cash and return flights for two to that hotbed of technology entrepreneurship, San Francisco.

Webstock Start-up Alley judge, BNZ National Manager of Small Business Harry Ferreira believes Go Vocab has the right mix of passion, drive, creativity and business nous to turn a start-up into a success.

“Go Vocab really stood out during the live pitch process, they demonstrated that their start-up has clear direction and purpose as well as the right product and strategy to take their business to the next level.”

Go Vocab is a language learning start-up founded in Wellington at the beginning of 2011, which has already signed up hundreds of teachers and thousands of students across Australia and New Zealand.

Picked from a field of six finalists in a live, dragon’s den style event, Go Vocab impressed the judges from the outset. TradeMe founder Sam Morgan was on the judging panel and said that picking a winner was tough.

“We liked what we saw from all six finalists. We saw a lot of passion and drive on display from all those who pitched tonight, but in the end, we’re happy with our decision and we can’t wait to see where Go Vocab go from here.”

Other judges include co-founder of Sonar6 John Holt, and MetaFilter founder Matt Haughey.

The Webstock conference began on February 13, and finishes tomorrow, February 17.
