Vodafone surges into the lead

Vodafone surges into the lead

January 6, 2012

In this monthly update of browser performance Vodafone has stolen the lead in ADSL browsing speed, just 4 months after being found slowest to download the TrueNet test webpage.

The chart below shows the noticeable improvement in Vodafone probes from early December.

Other note worthy changes in performance included Snap; slowing in the middle of November leading to a full month at the lower performance in December. TelstraClear ADSL slipped back on average due to their probes slowing down during the first week of December but performing normally for the remainder of the month. In past test results Telecom was ranked first as an ADSL ISP only last month, but dropped down the rankings to 4th, although the top 4 ISPs are very close; our probe measurements showed significantly slower performance for 4 days in mid December, lowering their average performance for the month.

A change to "Other" this month was due to one very slow probe volunteer switching to a better performing ISP, leading to an improvement in the average of all "Other" probes.

TelstraClear Cable remains the best performer compared to all ADSL suppliers.

ADSL Technology may have 2 Performance Standards

While confirming that no ISPs are manipulating TrueNet's testing, we noticed that three ISPs each had two groups of probes seperated by their significantly different performances. For each of these 3 ISPs, one group of probes performed very well - under 0.5s per page download; the other group performed poorly - over 1.5s per page download. With more investigative testing, TrueNet hopes to discover if there is an explanation for this.
