Eastgate Shopping Centre To Reopen On Wednesday
Christchurch’s Eastgate Shopping Centre will re-open for business on Wednesday, 28 December after sustaining minor cosmetic damage in the 23 December quakes.
Eastgate’s centre manager Graeme Roberts said, “Our engineers, Connor Consulting, have signed off the entire site, inclusive of all buildings, as structurally sound and able to trade. There are some cosmetic repairs to be made and we’ll be doing those over the Christmas period, in time for the 28 December opening.
“Countdown and The Warehouse re-opened on Christmas Eve, together with shops that are external to the main mall - Subway, MaxOut, Daina Fashions, Four Paws Pet Food, BGVO Hair Design and Eastgate Unichem. It was great to see that Christmas Eve trade was busy, the car park was packed out, and Countdown and The Warehouse had very brisk trade - both had record figures for the day. Despite these big aftershocks, we’re happy to say that Eastgate can look after the community of east Christchurch.”
Eastgate Shopping Centre is owned by NPT Limited. NPT’s acting chief executive Kerry Hitchcock says, “We’re very pleased that much of Eastgate is already operating after Friday’s earthquakes. We’re very grateful to the hard work put in by centre management, and also our engineers to be able to get the entire shopping centre open by Wednesday.
“NPT has two other Christchurch retail properties. Avonhead Shopping Centre, for which NPT has the head lease, fully reopened on Saturday. HWMC Warehouse in Hornby, with Briscoes and The Warehouse, also reopened on Christmas Eve.
NPT Limited is an NZX-listed company (NPT). It has a diversified portfolio of retail, commercial and industrial properties located in Auckland, Hawke’s Bay, Wellington and Christchurch. NPT was established in 1994 as a unit trust, The National Property Trust. On 1 April 2011 the trust was corporatised and became NPT Limited.
