Some Hospitality Businesses stay open on public holidays

In spite of a statement by Hospitality New Zealand, some hospitality outlets are happy to open during the Christmas and New Year holiday period.

“We have no reservations about complying with whatever holiday pay rates the Holidays Act mandates,” says Hashigo Zake Proprietor Dominic Kelly. “Our staff have done fantastic work this year and have earned a break. So if we ask them to work when others are on holiday they deserve to be paid accordingly.”

He continued: “Last year Boxing Day was one of our most enjoyable trading days of the year. A succession of visitors to Wellington and regular customers were delighted to find us open. We have no regrets about trading on statutory holidays.”

Hashigo Zake at 25 Taranaki St, Wellington will open its doors every day at midday, as usual, except Christmas Day. Closing on Christmas Day is a requirement of the Sale of Liquor Act.
