World’s largest traffic database enables TomTom to help drivers across the globe
Auckland, 29 November 2011 – TomTom’s database of historical traffic information has reached the five trillion data point mark. Customers around the globe have been contributing to this database by providing TomTom with anonymous travel data points. More than 140 billion kilometres of road have been driven by TomTom customers driving the 30 million kilometres of road in TomTom markets on average over 4,000 times.
Based on this wealth of information, TomTom knows exactly what the actual average speeds are that have been driven on road segments This information is included in TomTom navigation devices through IQ Routes, to give customers the best routes depending on the time of the day and the day of the week that they want to travel.
The database covers 37 countries including New Zealand and can help governments and local authorities to optimise road usage and make well-founded road infrastructure decisions.
In addition, 5.8 billion new data points are anonymously shared with TomTom every day enabling them to continuously improve their maps, making them the most up-to-date and of the highest quality.
TomTom products that are (partially) based on this database are:
• HD Traffic available in 23 countries including New Zealand
• IQ Routes with time-dependent speed profiles available in 31 countries including New Zealand
• Map features, map corrections and map updates
• Validation of Map Share™ reports
• Providing statistical information on road network efficiency, travel times and routes which forms a part of our products such as TomTom Traffic Stats – aimed at governments and authorities
