ENZA’s Red Kiwifruit Go on Sale in Italy

24 November 2011

ENZA’s Red Kiwifruit Go on Sale in Italy

Italian consumers are enjoying their first taste of red kiwifruit, with the stunning red-fleshed ENZARed™ going on sale in Milan.

Named one of the most exciting new fruit varieties to hit international supermarket shelves in recent years, ENZARed™ is the world’s first commercialised red kiwifruit.

Turners & Growers Development Manager, Murray Malone says the first ENZARed™ fruit in Italy is being introduced to consumers by Summerfruit, ENZA’s Italian kiwifruit growing and marketing partner.

The introduction of the fruit to Italian consumers follows successful growing trials of the ENZARed™ variety on Summerfruit’s Italian orchards. Early next year the first commercial plantings of ENZARed™ will get underway, with ENZA expecting over 200ha of the variety to be planted in Italy over time.

Murray Malone said the ENZARed™ fruit selling in Italy was grown in China where ENZA has established significant growing partnerships for the unique red kiwifruit cultivar as part of the company’s global development programme for the variety. “Plantings in Italy will form part of Turners & Growers 12-month supply strategy that will see ENZARed™ available in supermarkets year round."

He says the first ENZARed™ kiwifruit into Italy is selling well with “Italian consumers loving the sweet and delicate taste, creamy texture and striking colour of ENZARed.”

Owner of Summerfruit, Giampaolo DalPane says there is an excellent future for the ENZARed™ variety in Europe, where its colour and flavour will set it apart as the premium kiwifruit variety in supermarkets. “The growing conditions here are excellent for us to establish ENZARed™ orchards,” he said.
